Banner Records was established in New York in 1922 by the Plaza Music Company as a low-priced record label. It became one of the company’s principal budget labels, offering popular dance music, vocal recordings, comedy, jazz, blues, and country music. Banner records were widely distributed through discount and department stores, including S. S. Kresge.
In 1929, Plaza Music became part of the newly formed American Record Corporation (ARC), and Banner continued as an ARC label. Its catalog subsequently expanded to include more African American and country recordings. Banner remained in production through the 1930s before the label was discontinued as ARC consolidated its budget-label operations.
The label’s recordings feature performers such as Vernon Dalhart, Billy Murray, Roy Smeck, Carson Robison, Gene Autry, Frank Luther, and Arthur Fields. Banner is an important example of the inexpensive 78-rpm labels that helped make recorded music accessible to a broad American audience during the 1920s and 1930s.
