Abner Records

Abner Records was a subsidiary of Vee-Jay Records, named after Ewart Abner, the general manager of Vee-Jay from 1955 to 1961. Originally launched as Falcon Records in 1958, the name was changed to avoid conflicts with an existing label. Abner Records primarily functioned as an extension of Vee-Jay, releasing R&B and soul music. Alongside Abner Records, Vee-Jay also established Exodus Records, which focused on gospel music, including early recordings by Billy Preston and reissues of blues and jazz albums. Despite Vee-Jay’s financial struggles in the mid-1960s, Abner Records played a role in expanding the company’s catalog before Vee-Jay ultimately ceased operations.
