Banner Records was a New York record company established by Sam Selsman in 1946, with its first releases appearing in 1947. Unlike the earlier Banner label operated by Plaza Music and the American Record Corporation, this was an entirely separate company with no connection to the earlier label.
The new Banner specialized primarily in Jewish and Yiddish music, comedy, and cantorial recordings. Its roster included prominent performers such as Molly Picon, Maurice Schwartz, Leo Fuchs, Myron Cohen, George Jessel, and numerous cantors. The company also briefly issued English-language, Italian, and other popular material and introduced the Carnival label as a pop-music subsidiary in 1947.
After a period of limited activity, Banner was reorganized in 1950 under Gerald J. Morse. The label subsequently placed greater emphasis on cantorial and foreign-language recordings and issued LPs compiled from earlier 78-rpm material. Banner continued to be used for reissues into the 1960s, leaving behind an important catalog documenting Jewish, Yiddish, and cantorial musical culture in the United States.
