AJAX Records

Ajax Records was a short-lived but influential record label active from 1921 to 1925, specializing in jazz and blues recordings. A subsidiary of the Compo Company of Quebec, Ajax produced records in Montreal and New York City but distributed them exclusively in the United States. Marketed as “The Superior Race Record,” Ajax focused on African American artists, featuring performers such as Rosa Henderson, Mamie Smith, and Fletcher Henderson. Despite its strong branding and high-quality pressings, poor distribution outside the northeastern U.S. limited its success. The label ceased operations in 1925, with some of its masters later reissued by American Pathé. Today, Ajax records remain highly collectible for their historical and musical significance.
